Summer Internship: Inkwell Management

InkWell Management is looking for a summer intern! This position helps read and evaluate queries and manuscripts and helps with general administrative tasks which are designed to better understand the workings of a literary agency.  InkWell states that this experience includes: learning about the submission process to editors, discussions of the latest developments in industry trends, gaining an understanding of different royalty reports, and guidance on furthering a career in publishing. Interns will also learn about foreign rights, contracts, publicity and the use of social media in publishing.

New Voices Award

Lee & Low Books

TU BOOKS, the middle grade and young adult imprint of LEE & LOW BOOKS, is open for submissions to their New Voices Award. This contest is given annually to an unpublished author of color (in the contest age category, other categories okay). Previous winners include award-winning titles such as Ink and Ashes, Rebel Seoul, As Fast As Words Could Fly, Juna’s Jar, It Jes’ Happened, and Sixteen Years in Sixteen Seconds.

Manuscripts may be any genre for children ages 5-12, or young adult ages 12-18. Manuscripts should address the needs of children of color or native children by providing stories they can identify with and which promote greater understanding of one another. Themes relating to non-traditional family structures, gender identity, or disabilities are also of interest.

Contestants must meet all of the following criteria to be considered:

  • Self-identify as a person of color or a Native/indigenous person.
  • Be at least 18 years old at the time of entry.
  • Be a resident of the United States.
  • Must not be agented.

The Award winner receives a cash prize of $2000 and their standard publication contract, including their basic advance and royalties for a first time author. An Honor Award winner will receive a cash prize of $1000.

All manuscripts must be submitted no later than August 31, 2019. Be sure to read their entire guidelines before submitting. As always, good luck!

Secret Agent Contest via Authoress

Authoress (aka Jillian Boehme) is hosting a round of Secret Agent on her popular Miss Snark’s First Victim site. If you’ve followed Authoress for several years, then you know that she unveiled herself because she finally got her first book deal! (And this was her one condition she had promised herself before unveiling her true identity.) And many of us are so excited for her because she has given back to the community for so-so-so long! (Thank you Jillian!)

Now, for a few basic details of the contest:

  • Submissions open between Noon to 6pm EDT, April 1st, 2019
  • This is a lottery. The BOT will draw 50 random names.
  • Only the First 250 words will be submitted.
  • Only completed and polished manuscripts may be entered.
  • Only ONE entry per person!

As always, there is no fee to enter the contest. This month’s contest will include the following genres only:

  • Middle Grade–especially adventure stories and historical fiction
  • YA contemporary romance
  • YA magical realism
  • Women’s Fiction
  • Thriller/Suspense

Chicago Writing Workshop 2019

Chicago Writing Workshop

Per the Chicago Writing Workshop website, this writing event (June 29, 2019) is a wonderful opportunity to get intense instruction over the course of one day, pitch a literary agent or editor (optional), get your questions answered, and more. Note that there are limited seats at the event (200 total). They will inform everyone directly on the website when seats are closed.

Wergle Flomp Humor Poetry Contest

Winning Writers

Winning Writers is sponsoring the Wergle Flomp Humor Poetry Contest , which ends April 1, 2019. This contest seeks today’s best humorous poems. There isn’t a fee to enter, and even better, it’s for published or unpublished work! That’s right, even if the authors works was already published, it’s still eligible.

The judges will award a first prize of $1,000 and a second prize of $250. Ten Honorable Mentions will receive $100 each. The top 12 entries will be published online. To enter, submit a funny poem of no more than 250 lines. As always, good luck!

Picture Book Party To Get An Agent

Holy-moly! It’s another picture book contest. Things are looking up for the PB writers and illustrators, indeed. On March 19 2019 Michelle Hauck, along with Sharon Chriscoe and Mindy Alyse Weiss, will host a Picture Book Party. Submissions will open at 4pm EST and will remain open for one hour. You need to have a completed and polished PB manuscript and illustrations are encouraged to be submitted (if you’re an illustrator).
