The Johnson and Amoy Achong Caribbean Writers Prize is an annual award which allows an emerging Caribbean writer living and working in the Anglophone Caribbean to devote time to advancing or finishing a literary work, with support from an established writer as mentor. In its second year, 2020, this writers prize will be awarded for a literary non-fiction work in progress. The prize submission window closes September 30, 2019. The winner will be announced at the 2020 NGC Bocas Lit Fest.

The Fitzcarraldo Editions Novel Prize submission deadline is midnight July 15, 2019 (GMT). The judges are looking for novels which tackle subjects and themes relevant to the world we live in. The winner is to receive a £3,000 prize as an advance against publication with Fitzcarraldo Editions. The winning novelist’s publication joins a fiction list, alongside writers such as Claire-Louise Bennett, Mathias Enard, Camila Grudova, John Keene, Esther Kinsky, Olga Tokarczuk and Alejandro Zambra. Also, Jeremy Cooper won in 2018 for Ash before Oak, a novel in the form of a nature diary, obliquely charting the narrator’s slow return to health.

The Feminist Press has partnered with TAYO Literary Magazine for a contest seeking the best debut books by women and nonbinary writers of color to celebrate author Louis Meriwether’s achievements. This contest is for first time authors. Submit your complete manuscript of fiction (including novels and short story collections) or narrative memoir between 50,000 and 80,000 words. Capture their attention with your words to receive $5,000 and a publishing contract from the Feminist Press!

The University of Pittsburgh Press announces the 2019 Drue Heinz Literature Prize for a collection of short fiction. The prize carries a cash award of $15,000 and publication by the University of Pittsburgh Press under its standard contract. No information about the winner will be released before the official announcement. The volume of manuscripts prevents the Press from offering critiques or entering into communication or correspondence about manuscripts. Please do not call or e-mail the Press.

The award is open to writers who have published a novel or a book-length collection of fiction with a reputable book publisher, or a minimum of three short stories or novellas in magazines or journals of national distribution. Digital-only publication and self-publication do not count toward this requirement.

Eligible submissions include an unpublished manuscript of short stories; two or more novellas (a novella may comprise a maximum of 130 double-spaced typed pages); or a combination of one or more novellas and short stories. Novellas are only accepted as part of a larger collection. Manuscripts may be no fewer than 150 and no more than 300 typed pages. Prior publication of your manuscript as a whole in any format (including electronic) makes it ineligible.

Submissions are May 1 through June 30, 2019. Acceptable formats can be either email or mailed. Ge sure and read the complete guidelines before entering.

Winning Writers is sponsoring the Wergle Flomp Humor Poetry Contest , which ends April 1, 2019. This contest seeks today’s best humorous poems. There isn’t a fee to enter, and even better, it’s for published or unpublished work! That’s right, even if the authors works was already published, it’s still eligible.

The judges will award a first prize of $1,000 and a second prize of $250. Ten Honorable Mentions will receive $100 each. The top 12 entries will be published online. To enter, submit a funny poem of no more than 250 lines. As always, good luck!

Authoress (aka Jillian Boehme) is hosting a round of Secret Agent on her popular Miss Snark’s First Victim site. If you’ve followed Authoress for several years, then you know that she only unveiled herself because she finally got her first book deal! (And this was her one condition she had promised herself before unveiling her true identity.) And many of us are so excited for her because she has given back to the community for so-so-so long! New Visions Award – Middle Grade/Young Adult Manuscripts is Ending Soon

Lee & Low Books

Tu Books, the middle grade and young adult imprint of Lee & Low Books will be closing submissions soon for the New Visions Award. Established in 2012, this award is given annually to an unpublished author of color for a middle grade or young adult manuscript. Previous winners include the award-winning Ink and Ashes as well as the forthcoming novels Ahimsa and Rebel Seoul.

Manuscripts may be novels or graphic novels in any fictional genre for children ages 8 to 12 or young adults ages 12 to 18. Manuscripts should address the needs of children and teens of color by providing stories the can identify with and which promote greater understanding of one another. Themes relating to LGBTQ+ topics or disabilities may also be included.

Contestants must meet all of the following criteria to be considered:

Self-identify as a person of color or a Native/indigenous person.
Be at least 18 years old at the time of entry.
Be a resident of the United States.
Not have had a middle grade or young adult novel published.

The Award winner receives a cash prize of $1,000 and their standard publication contract, including their basic advance and royalties for a first time author. An Honor Award winner will receive a cash prize of $500.
