The tours are mini-writers’ conferences that help get your manuscript ready for publication. The Fitzcarraldo Editions Novel Prize submission deadline is midnight July 15, 2019 (GMT). The judges are looking for novels which tackle subjects and themes relevant to the world we live in. The winner is to receive a £3,000 prize as an advance against publication with Fitzcarraldo Editions. The winning novelist’s publication joins a fiction list, alongside writers such as Claire-Louise Bennett, Mathias Enard, Camila Grudova, John Keene, Esther Kinsky, Olga Tokarczuk and Alejandro Zambra. Also, Jeremy Cooper won in 2018 for Ash before Oak, a novel in the form of a nature diary, obliquely charting the narrator’s slow return to health.

Although St. Patrick’s Day began as a religious holiday in Ireland, people across many nations now celebrate March 17, the day believed to be Patrick’s death. Here are some noted facts:

St. Patrick was not Irish.
Born a nobleman in Britain about 400 A.D.
An atheist in his early years
Kidnapped by Irish pirates at age 16
A slave in Ireland for 17 years
Rediscovered his faith while in Ireland
Returned to Ireland as a missionary
Legend states St. Patrick used the three-leaved shamrock to explain Christian Holy Trinity. (But it’s said no evidence proves he ever did.)
Still unclear if St. Patrick died in Ireland

And for those who are Irish, know someone who is Irish, or just want to help celebrate for their own pleasure, put on your green clothes, green hats, green glasses, green everything, and have some green beer, or green cake, or green potatoes, or anything drinkable/edible green…but pah-lease don’t call me later when you are feeling oh-so green!

The Iceland Writers Retreat states that over the course of the retreat, each participant is enrolled in a total of five two-hour small-group writing workshops (max. 15 participants) led by internationally acclaimed authors, a Q&A panel with all faculty, and numerous readings and social functions. But there are only a few seats left, so you better hurry!

Each of our Featured Authors teaches two different workshops, and you have plenty of time to interact with faculty, including those with whom you do not have any workshops. The retreat takes place April 5-9, 2017 and costs approximately ISK 289,000 (approximately $2479 US dollars). Prices exclude airfare and airport transportation.

The Sunday Times Short Story Award

The Sunday Times is sponsoring an international award worth £30,000 to the winner. It’s open to any story of up to 6,000 words written in English. Stories need to have been either previously unpublished or only published after December 31, 2015. Five authors shortlisted for the award will each receive £1,000. The prize is administered by the Society of Authors.

To be eligible, the author must simply have a record of prior publication in creative writing in the United Kingdom or Ireland.

The deadline for entries is 6pm (GMT) on Thursday, 29 September 2016.

Then there is the much talked about August 7-14 tour hosted by author and contest queen Brenda Drake and the co-founder of Entangled Publishing Liz Pelletier . And lastly, there’s the August 21-28 hosted by author Dianne Salerni and editor Janet Lane.
