James Jones Fellowship Contest

The James Jones Fellowship Contest is for a novel-in-progress by a United States unpublished author. The award is given annually with a grand prize of $10,000. There are two runner-ups given a prize of $1000 each. A selection from the winning work will be published in Provincetown Arts. In order to enter, the author needs to submit the first 50 pages of the novel-in-progress, a two-page outline, and a $30 entry fee.

According to the web page, the award is intended to honor the spirit of unblinking honesty, determination, and insight into the cultural and social issues exemplified by the late James Jones, author of From Here to Eternity and other prose narratives of distinction. New Writing Contest: Fall Fiction Fest

Oh, how I love the creation of new writerly contests to help writers polish their work and get in front of agents! Fall Fiction Fest will be hosted by Michelle Hauck, Marty Mayberry, and Amy Trueblood. They will pick ten selections each to mentor. Manuscripts can be middle grade, young adult, new adult, or adult fiction. All genres are allowed except for erotica.

This contest requires a query and first 250 pages of a polished manuscript to enter. Submissions will only be open for 24 hours, so make sure you don’t miss the window of opportunity on October 31, 2018! And as always, good luck!

Revise & Resub is a writerly contest started in 2017 by a group of editors wanting to help writers find their dreams of publishing. Writers submit their completed manuscripts to two editors and one alternate for an opportunity to win feedback. The chosen writers will get help to ready their entire manuscripts for agent queries, and it’s FREE!

National Endowment For The Arts Grant

This is a grant for published writers to help them set aside time for writing, research, travel, and general career advancement. The grant awards $25,000 to the winners. The deadline to submit your application is tomorrow, March 8, 2017.

This year applications are for fiction and creative non-fiction. The winners won’t be announced until around December, 2017. Their support of a project will be anytime between January 1, 2018 and January 1, 2019.

If you write poetry, applications will be taken early 2018 for a 2019 winning and support. As always, good luck!

2017 Poetry Competition

The Society of Classical Poets is holding a poetry contest with a monetary prize! Metered and rhythmed poetry is preferred but not required. They usually do not publish love poems, free verse, or overly dark poems that don’t teach a positive lesson. Poems are judged based on both form and character. The poem should ideally be written in 2016, but does not have to be. It is okay if you have submitted it to other contests or posted it on your blog.

The poems must be within the four themes used by the Society, and at least one poem must be in the “Issues of Our Age” theme:

(1) Beautiful & Sublime: Beauty in human nature, culture, the natural world, classical art forms, and the divine.

(2) Humor & Riddles: Clean humor only please.

(3) The Issues of Our Age:

A. Terrorism. Terrorists and their ideology plague the world like a hate-filled cancer that does not seem to go away. How can the world defeat such an invisible foe?
B. The Environment. Though debate remains over climate change and GMOs, environmental pollution undeniably compromises our water and air. Nature’s beauty and purity plays victim to technology and industrialization.
C. Human Rights in China. In a globalized world, the human rights violations in China are essentially in our own backyard. Particularly heinous is the persecution of the peaceful meditation practice Falun Gong. Poetry in this category may also be submitted here.

(4) Great Culture: Good figures, stories, and other elements from classical (pre-1900) history and literature. Grand prize is $500 and there is a high school prize of $100. (Look to the site for additional prizes.) The deadline is December 31, 2016 with winners announced February 1, 2017. As always, good luck!

Oh yes, it’s that holly-jolly Pitchmas time! You know? The best time of the year! Where agents and editors stalk the feed to give you literary cheer!

Jessa Russo and Tamara Mataya are at it again! To submit, you’ll need a 35 word pitch for your finished, polished and unpublished manuscript! They will take submissions by email only, starting Sunday 12/11/16 at 9am PST and ending Monday 12/12/16 at 6pm PST. The winners will go live on the blog December 15, 2016.

Calling all Illustrators!

Enter the SCBWI Postcard Contest for a chance to be featured on SCBWI promotional postcards! Four winners of this contest will have their kite-themed art featured on SCBWI promotional postcards used by both the SCBWI main office as well as all of the regions around the country and the world. You’ll also receive a $50 gift certificate for art supplies, as well as exposure on our website and social media. Your name will be on the front of the postcard with your art.

To apply:

Anyone who is a member can apply, and unlike most of their other awards and contests, you may submit as many images as you like. The image must be kite themed.

Send Sarah Baker an email with your 5 x 7″ or 7 x 5″ image (as an attachment, not in the body of the email) and your name. Each submission must be sent in a separate email. If you are on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, include your social media handles in the email below your name.

Submissions must be high res (300dpi) jpegs. Title the file with your first and last name, i.e. SnowWhite.jpg (If you submit more than one, title them SnowWhite1.jpg, SnowWhite2.jpg, etc.) All submissions must be received by December 1, 2016.

Twitter Pitch Party #AdPit

Heidi Norrod is hosting another fabulous twitter pitch event for writers called AdPit. In order to participate, authors need to have a finished manuscript and tweet their 140 character pitch using the hashtag #AdPit on November 16. 2016. The contest will be between 9am-3pm CST (Chicago time). You will allowed to pitch six times over the course of the event. I’d suggest once every hour, as the event is six hours long.

This contest is open to ADULT and NEW ADULT COMPLETED, fiction and non-fiction books. And remember, be sure to research the trawling LITERARY AGENTS and EDITORS before submissions. As always, good luck!

Sparkhouse Family Children’s Picture Book Contest

Sparkhouse Family is a faith based publisher. They aim to publish creative, winsome, charming stories that help parents instill an open-hearted, transformational, life-long Christian faith in children ages 0-12.

The Sparkhouse Family Children’s Picture Book Contest is an open call for picture books that support this mission. They’ll choose one manuscript to develop into a picture book. The winning author will get a prize of $5,000 and a chance to have their book published by Sparkhouse Family.

To enter, submit a brief synopsis of your book, your author bio, your contact information, and complete manuscript. All submitted works must be finished, previously unpublished manuscripts of 1,000 words or less. The contest is open to new, upcoming, and established writers alike, but only unagented submissions are eligible.

They’ll accept submissions through November 15, 2016. The winner will be notified on December 15, 2016. As always, good luck!
