LatinxPitch is a kidlit pitching event for creators of children’s literature who belong to the Latinx community. The event was created to raise up Latinx voices and increase a diverse representation in children’s literature. All kidlit Latinx unagented and agented authors and/or illustrators are permitted to participate. Kidlit includes board books, picture books, chapter books, middle grade, graphic novels and young adult.

The event will take place on Twitter September 15, 2020 from 8am to 8pm EST. Be sure to use the hashtag #LatinxPitch. Agented authors and illustrators should check with their agents before participating and must include the hashtag #Editor to indicate they are looking for an editor and not an agent. Holy-moly! It’s another picture book contest. Things are looking up for the PB writers and illustrators, indeed. On March 9, 2020 Michelle Hauck, along with Mindy Alyse Weiss, will host a Picture Book Party. Submissions will open at 3:30pm EST and will remain open for two hours. You need to have a completed and polished PB manuscript and illustrations are encouraged to be submitted (if you’re an illustrator).

The search for diversity within books has increased, not just with secondary characters but main characters. The world wants to see a fabulous palette of colors and cultures among the stories they read and the publishing industry is responding! This prompted literary agent Beth Phelan of Galt & Zacker Literary Agency to create DVpit.

According to the site, #DVpit is a twitter event created to showcase pitches about and by marginalized voices. This includes (but is not limited to): Native peoples and people of color; people living and/or born/raised in underrepresented cultures and countries; disabled persons; people with illness; people on marginalized ends of the socioeconomic, cultural and/or religious spectrum; people identifying as LGBTQIA+; and more.

The next event will spread over two days:

April 23th will be for Children’s & Teen Fiction/Nonfiction (picture books, chapter books, graphic novel, middle grade, young adult)
April 24th will be for Adult Fiction/Nonfiction (all genres, commercial and literary)
April 25 will be for Artists + Illustrators
Each day the event will run from 8am-8pm ET using the hashtag #DVpit. Be sure and pitch your manuscript on the correct day because agents/editors will search the feed on the specific day of the category and genres they represent/acquire.As always, good luck!

Great news! Skylark Literary Agency has put together a competition for fiction manuscripts geared toward young readers of ages 8-12. (Non-fiction is not accepted.) They are looking for outstanding new stories with strong characters. Submissions must be from unagented and unpublished writers.

Little, Brown Books for Young Readers announces the LITTLE, BROWN EMERGING ARTIST AWARD for an unpublished artist with a great picture book idea. This new initiative seeks promising new talent and encourages the development of high-quality picture books that resonate with readers of diverse backgrounds and experience, while also providing valuable mentorship by an acclaimed illustrator and children’s book professionals.

Only one award will be given:

American Express® gift cards totaling $2,500;
Round-trip travel for the winner to New York City;
A day at LBYR’s offices in New York, including lunch with an editor, an art director, and the Artist Mentor, an in-person portfolio review by the Artist Mentor and the LBYR publishing staff, and a tour of the office; and
An opportunity for the winning submission to be reviewed by LBYR’s editorial team for possible future publication. (**A subsequent book publishing deal, if any, would be separately negotiated, and is not considered part of the Award).
