Massie & McQuilkin Literary Agents

Massie & McQuilkin Literary Agents is seeking a full time literary assistant to start as soon as possible in New York. (This is not a remote position.) Benefits will include health insurance. Responsibilities include

Handling general administrative tasks and office maintenance, logging submissions and contracts, scanning contracts and royalty statements, and facilitating author/editor interface.
Reading unsolicited and client manuscripts and writing reader’s reports, rejection letters and editorial letters.
Vetting and negotiating contracts
Assisting with foreign rights
Tracking payments
Evaluating text and photo permissions
Hiring and overseeing interns
Updating the agency’s Facebook and Instagram pages
Familiarity with Microsoft Office essential
Familiarity with BAITS a major plus
Familiarity with social media essential
At least one year of relevant experience essential.

Pockets Fiction Contest Closing

This contest is open to stories for children of 750-1000 words. The winner is to receive $500 and publication in Pockets Magazine. Entries must be postmarked no later than August 15, 2017.

Please indicate FICTION CONTEST on both the outside envelope and the cover sheet.

• There is no set theme and no entry fee.
• Stories should be 750–1,000 words. (Stories shorter than 750 words or longer than 1,000 words will be disqualified.)
• Stories must be previously unpublished.
• Please include an accurate word count on your cover sheet.
• Multiple submissions are permitted, but please submit only your best work.
• Past winners are ineligible.
• The winner will be announced November 1 at
pockets.upperroom.org.
• Award: $500 and publication in the magazine.
• Entries with an SASE will be returned.

Pitch Wars Submissions Are Open!

This is a quick reminder that Brenda Drake’s Pitch Wars submissions opened yesterday and will close August 6 at 10pm EDT (New York time). Go here for the guidelines and here to submit. There are two other ways to get into the contest, a scavenger hunt (scroll to find the info) to get a free pass into Pitch Wars and if you donate at least $20 you can pick two extra mentors. Woot! Note the participating menotrs are on the post with the scavenger hunt information. Lastly, be sure and stop by twitter to watch the #PitchWars feed because they are giving extra mentor prizes away.

Operation Awesome is hosting a Pass or Pages this month. For this round, the category is for contemporary romance (novels intended for adults, not YA). Submissions open between July 10 (6am EST) to July 12 (6pm EST), 2017. This is an opportunity to get feedback from an agent on your query and first 250 words of your manuscript. Peeps, this is priceless! And as a possible bonus, the agent reserves the right to request your FULL.

Once again, the Feminist Press has partnered with TAYO Literary Magazine to for a contest seeking the best debut books by women and nonbinary writers of color to celebrate author Louis Meriwether’s achievements. This contest is for first time authors. Submit your complete manuscript of fiction (including novels and short story collections) or narrative memoir between 50,000 and 80,000 words. Capture their attention with your words to receive $5,000 and a publishing contract from the Feminist Press!

Curtis Brown and Conville & Walsh’s #PitchCB on #Twitter

This Friday (June 23, 2017) will be the #PitchCB twitter event hosted by Curtis Brown Literary and Talent Agency and Conville & Walsh. These events are held on the fourth Friday of most months (so you can catch the next event if you miss this one).

In order to submit, prepare a 140 character pitch including #PitchCB hashtag for your completed manuscript. The window will be open for 24 hours and remember to only pitch once! If your pitch is “liked”, submit directly to that agent following the agencies’ submission guidelines.

#pg70pit Contest is Tommorrow!

Lara Willard is hosting the third annual pg70pit, an unique type of contest and pitching opportunity for writers with complete, polished novels (Middle Grade, YA, or NA/Adult) in any genre except erotica. #70pit17 is this years hashtag. Submissions open at 7am EST on June 7, 2017 and is open for 24 hours. Lottery winners will be drawn from the form on the blog and from twitter. They’ll be announced on June 17th, 2017. The lucky folks selected will move on to an agent round on July 7, 2017.

The Daily Mail and Penguin Random House Crime-Writing Competition Closing

Have you written a crime novel? Do you live in the UK or the Republic of Ireland? Then this contest is for you. The Daily Mail and Penguin Random House competition to search for a new crime-writing talent ends May 5, 2017. So you’d better hurry! Here’s the deets. The winner of the First Novel Competition will receive a £20,000 advance and publishing contract with Century, an imprint of Penguin Random House UK, and the services of literary agent Luigi Bonomi. Now that’s something to talk about people!

Entrants are invited to submit the first 5000 words of their novel along with a 600 word synopsis. The submissions must be in the crime and thriller genre and entrants must not have had a novel published before. And let me reiterate, submissions must be postmarked by May 5, 2017. #TeenPit Submissions Open Today!

This is a reminder that #TeenPit submissions open today at 8am EDT. The event is hosted by K. Hopkins. The main objective is to select a teen writer for a guaranteed slot in PitchWars (hosted by Brenda Drake) later this summer. Teens who wish to enter #TeenPit must be high school-aged students (grades 10-12). The mentors are only accepting middle grade and young adult manuscripts (absolutely no adult stories, sorry).

Author Mentor Match is Open for Subs

Author Mentor Match is open for submissions. This event matches aspiring writers with agented authors to hone their completed manuscripts. There is no agent round or contest aspect, but a focus on building lasting relationships. Mentors will help writers revise their manuscript before querying, give advice and tips on agents, and support through the process.

This is a big deal in the writerly world because paying for editing can be extremely expensive! At first glance, the website seems like it may only be for young adult stories, but upon further reading it is clearly for YA & MG. If you’re interested in submitting, go check out the mentors involved (and get a load of their books) . Be sure to view the guidelines and submit before 11:59pm PT on April 23, 2017.
