L. Ron Hubbard’s Writers of the Future Contest is an opportunity for new and amateur writers of new short stories or novelettes of science fiction or fantasy. No entry fee is required. Entrants retain all publication rights. All awards are adjudicated by professional writers only. Prizes every three months: $1,000, $750, $500. Jean V. Naggar Literary Agency is offering a spring remote internship. It involves tasks that are designed to acquaint an intern with the daily workings of a literary agency, as well as the world of publishing as a whole. The intern would be trained in areas such as use of a software program used by a variety of literary agencies and publishers, the nature of the submission process (both domestically and internationally), along with other various projects; including database entry, social media, and assisting with royalty statements and contracts.

Length of intership is September through December (start and end dates are flexible.
20 hours a week required for 3-4 months (at least 2 day per week commitment)
No payment, school credit only. (Thus, applicants must be able to recieve school credit.)

Liza Dawson Associates is looking for a remote intern for 2021 spring. They are a full-service literary agency based in New York City that represents a wide range of fiction and non-fiction. The canidate should be passionate and knowledgable in the science-fiction and fantasy genres to assist agent Hannah Bowman in reading queries, requesting partials, reading partials and preparing reader reports.

A strong applicant will be familiar with Hannah Bowman’s list and her manuscript wish list. Strong written and verbal communication skills are necessary. Candidates must be able to commit 5-6 hours a week for 3-4 months. BIPOC applicants encouraged to apply.

While they no longer accept unsolicited manuscripts, they do offer unpublished and unagented writers of children’s fiction the chance to submit their work to the annual Times/Chicken House Children’s Fiction Competition. They’re looking for original ideas, a fresh voice and a story that children will love!

First prize is a worldwide publishing contract with Chicken House with a royalty advance of £10,000 (approximately $12,500 US), plus representation from a top children’s literary agent.

To enter, you must have written a completed full-length novel suitable for children/young adults aged somewhere between 7 and 18 years. The full-length , manuscript should be minimum of 30,000 words and do not exceed 80,000 words in length.

Defiore and Company is looking for an intern wanting to learn about all aspects of the publishing industry. Working with agents as they liaison between authors and publishers can give interns a wealth of knowledge to progress in the publishing industry.

Candidates should be motivated, well-organized, responsible, and have excellent communication skills. Some experience analyzing and assessing written materials is preferred, but not necessary. Interns should be willing to commit 15-20 hours per week for a minimum of three months.

The Bath Children’s Novel Award is an international writing competition for unpublished and independently published novelists. This years judge is literary agent Stephanie Thwaites of Curtis Brown LTD of UK. The winner will receive £3000 (approximately $3878.40 US). And the most promising longlisted novel, will receive a free place on the Cornerstones Literary Consultancy online 18 week course Edit Your Novel the Professional Way , valued at £1,800 (approximately $2365 US).

Some of the past participants and winners have gone on to getting agents and/or publishing deals. Inaugural winner Lucy Van Smit was swiftly signed by literary agent Sallyanne Sweeney. Jane Brittan attracted a Carnegie Medal nomination for her indie-published debut. Shortlistee Sophie Cameron signed a book deal with Macmillan Children’s after accepting representation with literary agent Hellie Ogden for her YA novel Out of the Blue. Struan Murray signed a six figure deal with Penguin Random House for his novel Orphans of the Tide.

Faith Pitch is a Twitter pitch event exclusively for faith-based fiction is being hosted by Little Lamb Books on November 12, 2020 between 8am – 8pm CST. This is for board books, picture books, middle grade, young adult, and adult fiction that fall under the categories of inspirational, faith-based, biblical worldview, or Christian. Different denominations, ethnicities, a POV in this niche are encouraged. Be sure to use the hashtag #FaithPitch and only pitch 4 times per manuscript during the pitch window. Agents and editors are taking live pitches on the SavvyAuthors blog! What you will need is a three line pitch (unless stated differently on their personal pitch page). Be sure to state the title, genre, word length, and your author name. Then post your pitch below that information. The format should look like this:

Agnes plays pretend in an old manor to keep her father’s memory alive and learns she must solve the murder of an eight-year-old ghost—daughter of Franz San Galli, the inventor of the radiator. Her non-believing brother wants her to grow up but she must convince him to acquire his help. After all, it’s not safe to play in secret passages and hidden rooms when a sinister specter threatens her.
