McIntosh & Otis, Inc. is looking for a remote intern for the adult department. This is unpaid and the candidate must be enrolled as a student. They would like an intern to work 12-18 hours per week and to commit to a 3-month term, but they’ll work with the interns schedule. The agency will also work with students to possibly receive academic credit.

Requirements:

Currently enrolled as a student
Voracious reader
Strong writer
Keen editorial eye
Interested in in adult fiction and non-fiction
Detail-oriented, with office skills as a plus
Enthusiastic

Penguin Random House is offering their first paid remote internship! It will be available for their adult or children’s editorial department. Editors decides whether or not to pursue stories for acquisition and works with authors to turn their manuscript into a finished book. They negotiate contracts, edit the books for content, structure and on a line-by-line basis, and collaborate with internal departments on how to package, market, and publicize the book.

Specific responsibilities may include:

Reading, evaluating, and responding to slush, agented submissions, and contracted works
Writing reports and copy
Updating title information sheets
Attending virtual meetings with department
Researching consumer interests and identifying trends via social media and other outlets
Competitive title research

Fall interns work 14 hours per week and are paid $20hr. Intern schedules will be flexible to account for candidates who may be located in a variety of time zones. To be eligible, you can be a rising college senior, a graduate; and/or any candidate available for full-time employment within 6 months to 1 year. (You need not be enrolled in college or have a degree to apply to the internship program.) No experience is required! The Fall 2020 Remote Internship Program is intended to provide opportunities for racially/ethnically underrepresented groups in the publishing industry.

The internship program runs from September 28, 2020 – November 20, 2020 and the application deadline is August 16, 2020. To apply, submit your resume using their online application process. Cover letters are encouraged and they suggest that you indicate if you have a preference for working with adult or children’s books, or if you are particularly interested in any genre(s).

HG LITERARY

Hannigan Getzler Literary Agency is looking for a summer intern to work directly with their agents for twelve weeks, approximately two days per week. The main task of the intern will be reading manuscripts from both potential clients and current agency clients, assessing quality of submissions, and providing editorial feedback. Interns also learn to write reader’s reports, rejection letters, editorial letters, and pitch letters. (Note: this is NOT a remote internship.)

Dystel, Goderich & Bourret is looking for organized, reliable, efficient individuals to be interns and are interested in learning about the publishing industry. Candidates should be committed to devoting 15-20 hours per week in-house (New York). Applicants should be interested in learning the specifics of agenting, open to reading widely, and are detail-oriented, organized, and have critical reading and research skills.

Intern Responsibilities:
• Assist with reading slush, partial, and full manuscripts.
• Request and evaluate manuscripts.
• Write readers reports.
• Assist with contracts, royalty statements, and author correspondence as needed.
• Administrative duties, including but not limited to research, copyediting, filing, scanning, answering phones, data entry.

This will be for one semester from January until mid-May 2020 and is unpaid. Requirements:
• Strong writing and editing skills

• Well-read across different genres
• Basic computer skills
• Availability 2-3 days a week

Abrams Books is looking for a Permissions Research Intern. The main task of the intern will be clearing 400 image permissions for PICTURED WORLDS, a collection of illustrations from Children’s books around the world. The intern will be working in-house and performing photo research for the featured illustrators in the book. Intern will be responsible for maintaining database of permissions, tracking permission statuses, ensuring high-resolution images are delivered appropriately, and monitoring schedules.

Additional tasks might include admin support for Overlook including logging and managing submissions; sending contracts and advance payments; processing invoices; sending rejection letters for unsolicited submissions; routing materials; and checking proofs, etc.

This is an in-house internship (New York) to be June 3 through mid-August and will pay $15/hour for 3 days a week. The individual hired should be proficient in Word and Excel and have excellent internet research skills, with a demonstrated interest in developing their editorial skills and learning about the publishing process. Though familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style and foreign languages is a plus, it’s not required.
