Remote Internship: Writers House

Writers House is searching for a remote intern for spring 2021 with an interest in publishing. Office experience is a plus with knowledge and interest in genre fiction; especially, young adult, thrillers, mysteries, romance, and science fiction/ fantasy. The end goal of the internship is to provide its participants an education in the publishing industry from the perspective of a literary agency. According to Writers House, at the end of the program the interns:

•Will have developed sound criteria for evaluating query letters, partial manuscripts, and full manuscripts.
•Will have advanced their ability to generate rejection letters, reader’s reports, editorial letters, and pitch letters.
•Will have gained new administrative skills that pertain specifically to publishing including Literary Expert, comparing contracts, reviewing royalty statements, and managing and maintaining calendars.
•Will have advanced their cover letter and resume writing skills.
•Will have advanced their job interviewing skills.

This internship involves a series of ongoing programs; specifically, weekly intern meetings, weekly tutorials, evening seminars, and one-on-one sessions. Interns will regularly engage in a broad range of editorial, administrative, organizational, and logistical duties as they develop the skills requisite to entry-level positions in publishing.

JEAN V. NAGGAR LITERARY AGENCY, INC

Jean V. Naggar Literary Agency is offering a spring remote internship. It involves tasks that are designed to acquaint an intern with the daily workings of a literary agency, as well as the world of publishing as a whole. The intern would be trained in areas such as use of a software program used by a variety of literary agencies and publishers, the nature of the submission process (both domestically and internationally), along with other various projects; including database entry, social media, and assisting with royalty statements and contracts.

  • Length of intership is September through December (start and end dates are flexible.
  • 20 hours a week required for 3-4 months (at least 2 day per week commitment)
  • No payment, school credit only. (Thus, applicants must be able to recieve school credit.)

Remote Intership: Liza Dawson Associates

Liza Dawson Associates is looking for a remote intern for 2021 spring. They are a full-service literary agency based in New York City that represents a wide range of fiction and non-fiction. The canidate should be passionate and knowledgable in the science-fiction and fantasy genres to assist agent Hannah Bowman in reading queries, requesting partials, reading partials and preparing reader reports.

A strong applicant will be familiar with Hannah Bowman’s list and her manuscript wish list. Strong written and verbal communication skills are necessary. Candidates must be able to commit 5-6 hours a week for 3-4 months. BIPOC applicants encouraged to apply.

Remote Intership: McIntosh and Otis

For all you lovers of adult fiction or non-fiction, you’ll be excited to learn that McIntosh & Otis is seeking a remote intern. Applicants should have a strong interest in book publishing and be savvy readers and strong writers who have office experience. Intern will be responsible for reading submissions and writing evaluations of adult fiction and non-fiction manuscripts. In addition, the intern will assist the existing support staff of the department, handle mailings, filing, and other day to day tasks. The internship will also include administrative tasks such as scanning and copying, but the goal is to create an environment where students will learn firsthand about an agency’s role in book publishing. They would like an intern to work 12-18 hours per week and to commit to a 3 month term, but they can be extremely flexible with your schedule.

  • Length of the 3 months internship begins late August to early September and ends in December, 2020.
  • Current undergraduates strongly preferred.
  • Modest stipend available.
  • Remote
  • Additional requirements: voracious reader, strong writer, interested in adult fiction and non-fiction, organized, enthusiastic, previous office experience preferred.

Remote Internship: Foundry Literary + Media

The remote internship is offered by Foundry Literary + Media for the fall of 2020. This is an exciting opportunity, but candidates must be working towards a bachelor’s degree or post-graduate degree. Recent college graduates may also apply for the position. However, no experience in publishing is required. A two day commitment is desired with work and academic schedules accommodated.

This is for people with a love of reading who are interested in entering the publishing world. The internship will provide experience in many different sides of the publishing industry, including editorial, foreign rights, and filmed media. Projects may include reading and reporting on manuscripts, assisting with editorial submissions, writing coverage of screenplays and manuscripts being considered for film adaptation, drafting posts for Foundry’s social media platforms, and researching new book ideas and potential authors, among others.

Internship: Foundry Literary + Media

There are two internships available to apply for at Foundry Literary + Media for the summer of 2019. These are exciting opportunities, but candidates must be working towards a bachelor’s degree or post-graduate degree. Recent college graduates may also apply for the position. However, no experience in publishing is required. A two day commitment is preferred, but one day applicants will also be considered.

Editorial Internship

This is for people with a love of reading who are interested in entering the publishing world, either as a future editor or literary agent. Intern will spend time reading through submissions (both solicited and unsolicited material); evaluating the material and drafting reader’s reports; compiling editorial comments; and making recommendations to the agents.

Intern may also work on various special projects that will increase an understanding of how the publishing industry works. Additional projects may include updating editor lists, assisting in making submissions and conducting independent research online or in the media to identify new book ideas and potential authors.

Contracts Internship

This internship gives a unique view at the behind-the-scenes workings of the publishing industry, while providing excellent experience in the backend duties of an agency. The Intern will spend time familiarizing things with the foreign rights and contracts departments, and keeping records up-to-date and organized. Also, the opportunity will be given to read and evaluate submissions if interested. This internship is ideal for anyone with an interest in business or contract law and how they intersect with the creative industry.

The intern will spend time working on various special projects that will greatly increase the understanding of how the publishing industry works. Projects may include updating royalty statement records, assisting in contracts tracking, drafting posts for Foundry’s social media platforms, and managing the distribution of foreign editions.
