Bath Children’s Novel Award

The Bath Children’s Novel Award is an international writing competition for unpublished and independently published novelists. This years judge is literary agent Stephanie Thwaites of Curtis Brown literary agency. The winner will receive £3,000 (approximately $3846 US). And the most promising longlisted novel will recieve the Edit Your Novel the Professional Way from Cornerstones Literary Consultancy.

Some of the past participants and winners have gone on to getting agents and/or publishing deals. Inaugural winner Lucy Van Smit was swiftly signed by literary agent Sallyanne Sweeney. Jane Brittan attracted a Carnegie Medal nomination for her indie-published debut. Shortlistee Sophie Cameron signed a book deal with Macmillan Children’s after accepting representation with literary agent Hellie Ogden for her YA novel Out of the Blue. Struan Murray signed a six figure deal with Penguin Random House for his novel Orphans of the Tide.

Remote Internship: Foundry Literary + Media

The remote internship is offered by Foundry Literary + Media for the fall of 2020. This is an exciting opportunity, but candidates must be working towards a bachelor’s degree or post-graduate degree. Recent college graduates may also apply for the position. However, no experience in publishing is required. A two day commitment is desired with work and academic schedules accommodated.

This is for people with a love of reading who are interested in entering the publishing world. The internship will provide experience in many different sides of the publishing industry, including editorial, foreign rights, and filmed media. Projects may include reading and reporting on manuscripts, assisting with editorial submissions, writing coverage of screenplays and manuscripts being considered for film adaptation, drafting posts for Foundry’s social media platforms, and researching new book ideas and potential authors, among others.

Deadline to apply is August 15, 2020. Send a cover letter and resume to Yona Levin at psasst@foundrymedia.com. Make sure the subject line reads: Literary Agency Internship, Fall 2020. ind, If you have interest or experience in foreign rights and/or filmed media, be sure to reference that in your cover letter. There is no payment, but if your school or career center requires it, they can provide academic credit for your time with them.

Delaware Division of the Arts Individual Artists Fellowships. Deadline Approaching

Delaware Division of the Arts Individual Artist Fellowships (FY 2021) is a competitive award based on quality as demonstrated by creativity and skill in an art form. Applications are accepted in eighteen artistic disciplines in the fields of choreography, folk art, jazz, literature, media arts, music, and visual arts. Applicants can be emerging or established artists. (I think these are one year.) The Masters Fellowship is available in select disciplines on a three-year rotating basis to artists who meet specific criteria.

Judges are anonymous. Mid Atlantic Arts Foundation assists with the administration of the program. Awards are $3,000 for Emerging; $6,000 for Established; and $10,000 for Masters. Deadline to submit is August 3, 2020. Artists MUST have been a resident of Delaware one year prior to submission, and has to remain a resident of Delaware during the entire fellowship. Harlequin Romance is looking for Black romance writers. Details are often posted on their blog So You Think You Can Write of upcoming opportunities. The latest submission event is an open-ended submission period (no deadline). Harlequin wants to publish more diverse and inclusive voices and stories. If you think you’ve got what it takes and have a polished romance manuscript ready for submission, this might be for you!

Submissions will be uploaded to Submittable and must include #RomanceIncludesYou with the title of your manuscript. But before you send things off to the editors, be sure and read the guidelines for the imprint you want to submit to. And as always, good luck!

It’s another year of celebrating the Declaration of Independence, which was adopted 244 years ago on July 4, 1776. Typically, it’s a time of celebration with our families and friends, watching fireworks, and eating lots of food. This year with the pandemic, all might be done a bit differently. But no matter how you celebrate, here are a few facts you may not know:

Although adopted on July 4, it wasn’t officially signed on this day.
More than one copy exists.
A riot broke out in New York upon the news and a statue of George III was melted to shape more than 42,000 musket balls.
Eight of the 56 signers were born in Britain and not America.
Richard Stockton became the only signer to later recant his support of the revolution.
One of the copies sold for $8.1 million.

Happy Father’s Day to all the wonderful fathers in the world. For all the times you kept going when everyone else became ill, good job! For all the troubled times you were strong and everyone around you crumbled, I’m proud of you. For every dream you set aside to help another achieve theirs…you are awesome! For every person you tucked into bed to chase nightmares away and lost your own sleep, go you!

But this is YOUR day! It’s okay to sit, sleep, read a book, let the grass not get mowed, not pick up your clothes, let someone else fix the car, or have another person grill the burgers. Rest, because you deserve it. And it’s okay if you want to seize life and do something spontaneous or out of character, or simply be yourself. Take a hike, explore a cave, go fishing, bungee jump, repel, ride a motorcycle, pick some flowers, or maybe knit a scarf (like Russel Crowe). Take the kids or don’t take the kids. Seize your day because you are DAD and you are APPRECIATED!

I have been quiet for several weeks because I have felt overwhelmed between my uncle dying, Coronavirus, worrying about my job, and distressed about police brutality. But honestly, I think my brain started shutting down when the Pandemic struck. Then, as things progressed with continued bad news, I became numb. But it’s time to officially announce my stance. I support the Black Lives Matter movement. I might lose some followers, but I won’t need to mingle with those racist piece of poops anyway. Hopefully, I will gain new followers with amazingly diverse backgrounds!

Since I am a writer, I thought one of the ways I could show support is by posting some books by black authors. And since my taste revolves around the strange, most (not all) of these stories have strange creatures, ghosts, zombies, witches, mermaids, dragons, aliens, cursed people, super heroes, or people full of magical skills! If you know more, please feel free to mention them in the comments below.
