2020 Baen Fantasy Adventure Award

For all lurking contest junkies, Baen Books has a contest that was brought to my attention a few years back. You only need to create 8000 words. That’s right, a mere eight-thousand! Most thrilling? You have until April 30th, 2020 to create a wonderful story.

GRAND PRIZE winner will be published as the featured story on the Baen Books main website and paid at industry-standard rates for professional story submittals. The author will also receive a handsome engraved award and a prize package containing $500 of free Baen Books.
SECOND place winner will receive a prize package containing $500 of free Baen Books,
THIRD will receive a prize package containing $300 of free Baen Books.

Baen Books will announce the winner of the inaugural Baen Fantasy Adventure Award at this year’s Gen Con to the best of original short fiction capturing the spirit and tradition of great storytellers as Larry Correia, Robert E. Howard, Mercedes Lackey, Elizabeth Moon, Andre Norton, J.R.R. Tolkien, David Weber and Marion Zimmer Bradley.

Author Mentor Match #AMM Round 7

Author Mentor Match was created by Heather Kaczynski and Alexa Donne. The object is to match new writers with authors further along in the publishing process and gain invaluable mentoring! That’s right, this is an opportunity to get your manuscript critiqued (for free) before submitting to agents!

Authors can select up to four mentors during the submission window which is already opened! Submissions close tomorrow February 16, 2020. Watch for the mentor BIOS to be posted to learn what age groups and genres they wish to see in their inbox!

Please note there is a two-step process for entering:

Fill out the submission form. (I believe the form will appear during the sub window period.)
Email the proper information to authormentormatch@gmail.com:

A query (pasted in the body of the email!)
The first 50 pages/3 chapters of your novel (whichever is longer & can be attached)
A synopsis

Be sure to include in the subject line the manuscripts Age Category +Genre + Title. (ie: YA Sci-Fi – Mars Plants are the Bomb) on the email submission. #FaithPitch is Coming!

A Twitter pitch event exclusively for faith-based fiction is being hosted by Little Lamb Books on November 20, 2019 between 8am – 8pm CST. This is for board books, picture books, middle grade, young adult, and adult fiction that fall under the categories of inspirational, faith-based, biblical worldview, or Christian. Different denominations, ethnicities, a POV in this niche are encouraged. Be sure to use the hashtag #FaithPitch and only pitch 4 times per manuscript during the pitch window. (Maximum of 4 manuscripts are permitted.)

DVpit is coming!

The search for diversity within books has increased, not just with secondary characters but main characters. The world wants to see a fabulous palette of colors and cultures among the stories they read and the publishing industry is responding! This prompted literary agent Beth Phelan of Galt & Zacker Literary Agency to create DVpit.

According to the site, #DVpit is a twitter event created to showcase pitches about and by marginalized voices. This includes (but is not limited to): Native peoples and people of color; people living and/or born/raised in underrepresented cultures and countries; disabled persons; people with illness; people on marginalized ends of the socioeconomic, cultural and/or religious spectrum; people identifying as LGBTQIA+; and more.

The next event will spread over two days

October 28 will be for Children’s & Teen Fiction/Nonfiction (picture books, chapter books, graphic novel, middle grade, young adult).
October 29 will be for Adult Fiction/Nonfiction (all genres, commercial and literary).
October 29 Artists and Illustrators are included on this day.

Each day the event will run from 8am-8pm ET using the hashtag #DVpit. Be sure and pitch your manuscript on the correct day because agents/editors will search the feed on the specific day of the category and genres they represent/acquire. And finally, make sure you follow the guidelines for pitching.

Gransnet and HQ (imprint of HarperCollins) are launching a fiction writing competition for women writers over 40. Applicants can submit 20,000 words to HQ by September 30, 2019 at 11:59pm BST, however the leading character must also be female and over 40. Five shortlisted writers will receive editorial feedback, with the overall winner being offered a publishing contract with HQ.

Judges of the competition include Gransnet editor Cari Rosen, HQ Publishing Director Kate Mills, author Sarah Morgan and journalist Nina Pottell. For more information, please go here. And as always, good luck!

So, if you’re looking for an agent, read their wishes because you just might’ve written exactly what they’re looking for. As for the editors, be sure and check their guidelines because not all of them accept unagented manuscripts. Then, why are they tweeting you ask? Because agents need to submit their clients just the same as when an author subs to an agent.

Coffee House Press is looking for an intern for the spring 2020 semester. The internship will introduce you to small literary publishing, and will give you skills to transfer to larger publishing houses and other careers, both in the arts and elsewhere. Applicants should be organized, reliable, efficient individuals interested in a publishing career.

The hours are flexible, averaging 12–15 hours per week over the course of approximately four months for a total of at least 200 hours. At the completion of the internship, interns receive a $1,200 stipend, $100 worth of discounted Coffee House titles, and a discount on all future purchases.

INTERN TASKS:

Reading and reporting on submissions
Manuscript fact-checking
Proofreading
Acquisitions and permissions research
Filing and other assorted administrative duties (such as answering phones and taking messages)
Researching donor and grant prospects
Database upkeep, including spreadsheets and database software
Writing copy for newsletters, reading group guides, and the CHP website
Coordinating and assisting with mailings (galleys, press releases, catalogs, etc.)
Assisting with upkeep of publicity materials
Light page layout and editing of press materials, signs, and other documents
Providing support before and during events
Assisting with direct sales in the office and at events
Website maintenance
Other tasks as assigned

This internship is located in Minneapolis, MN and will not be remote. Submissions are from September 15, 2019 from November 1, 2019 with the internship lasting January through April of 2019. To apply, send:

Writers House is searching for an intern with an interest in publishing. Office experience is a plus with knowledge and interest in genre fiction; especially, young adult, thrillers, mysteries, romance, and science fiction/ fantasy. The end goal of the internship is to provide its participants an education in the publishing industry from the perspective of a literary agency. According to Writers House, at the end of the program the interns:

•Will have developed sound criteria for evaluating query letters, partial manuscripts, and full manuscripts.
•Will have advanced their ability to generate rejection letters, reader’s reports, editorial letters, and pitch letters.
•Will have gained new administrative skills that pertain specifically to publishing including Literary Expert, comparing contracts, reviewing royalty statements, and managing and maintaining calendars.
•Will have advanced their cover letter and resume writing skills.
•Will have advanced their job interviewing skills.

This internship involves a series of ongoing programs; specifically, weekly intern meetings, weekly tutorials, evening seminars, and one-on-one sessions. Interns will regularly engage in a broad range of editorial, administrative, organizational, and logistical duties as they develop the skills requisite to entry-level positions in publishing.
