2020 Baen Fantasy Adventure Award

For all lurking contest junkies, Baen Books has a contest that was brought to my attention a few years back. You only need to create 8000 words. That’s right, a mere eight-thousand! Most thrilling? You have until April 30th, 2020 to create a wonderful story.

  • GRAND PRIZE winner will be published as the featured story on the Baen Books main website and paid at industry-standard rates for professional story submittals. The author will also receive a handsome engraved award and a prize package containing $500 of free Baen Books.
  • SECOND place winner will receive a prize package containing $500 of free Baen Books,
  • THIRD will receive a prize package containing $300 of free Baen Books.

Baen Books will announce the winner of the inaugural Baen Fantasy Adventure Award at this year’s Gen Con to the best of original short fiction capturing the spirit and tradition of great storytellers as Larry Correia, Robert E. Howard, Mercedes Lackey, Elizabeth Moon, Andre Norton, J.R.R. Tolkien, David Weber and Marion Zimmer Bradley.

YA Discovery Contest 2018

Serendipity Literary Agency is hosting their annual writer’s Young Adult Discovery Competition. If writers are having trouble pitching ideas, no worries with this contest because they won’t even need a query! Seriously, only the first 250 words will be needed to submit.

YA literary agent Regina Brooks and her team will read all of the entries and determine the top 20 submissions.  (There will be great prizes for the top winners!) These submissions will then be read by editors from many of the major publishing houses. Past judges include editors from Scholastic, Random House/Penguin, Little Brown, Candlewick, Bloomsbury, Simon and Schuster, JIMMY Patterson Books, and Abram Books.  Judges will whittle the top 20 down to five winners, including a Grand Prize Winner.

Submissions open on November 1, 2018 at 12:01am (ET) and close on November 30, 2018 at 12:59pm (ET). Only one entry per person with a $15 entry fee. The contest is open to U.S. and Canada residents only.

2018 Nelson Algren Literary Awards Submissions Ending Soon!

Submissions for the 2018 Nelson Algren Literary Awards (sponsored by the Chicago Tribune) is ending on February 7, 2018 at 11:59pm CST. Entrants must be 18 years of age and submit their original short fiction of up to 8000 words.

Prizes

  • One Grand Prize: $3,500.
  • Four Finalist Prizes: $1,000.
  • Five Runner-up Prizes: $500.

Writer’s Digest Short Story Competition

Writer’s Digest is hosting a writing competition for short stories (1,500 words or less) with a grand prize worth $3,000, a feature in Writer’s Digest magazine and more.

The 4th Annual Book Pipeline Competition seeks material for film or television adaptation. Open to writers worldwide, the contest accepts any genre, fiction or non-fiction. Published and unpublished works are both acceptable.

James Patterson Masterclass and Co-Author Competition

With New York Times Bestselling author James Patterson‘s net worth at $700 million, who wouldn’t want to take a MasterClass with him? There will be 22 video lessons and exercises for $90. Super afforadable peeps! Even better, he’s choosing someone from the class to co-author a book with him!

Say what?

Yeppers, you heard right. James Patterson will choose someone to write a novel with him. During the competition, each stage is designed to help you craft and pitch a novel. And the prizes are:

  • 10 Semi-Finalists: Ten students will win $1000 based on book hook and sample chapter.
  • 3 Finalists: Three students from the ten semi-finalists will be chosen to submit outlines for their books and will win $2500.
  • 1 Grand Prize Winner: Opportunity to co-author a book with James Patterson. In addition, $5000.

If you’re interested, get your words polished. The deadline for the competition is March 1, 2017!
