Under The Volcano Master Classes In Mexico

Under The Volcano has master classes over a nine day stay in Tepoztlan, Mexico. This retreat is for writers wanting to vacation, learn, and write on their WIP simultaneously. Even greater, these types of trips are tax deductible for writers. (Yes, you heard that right.)

The next session will be January 10-20, 2019 and the program fee includes:

Tuition for 6 three-hour workshops
One individual conference
Opening reception, orientation and closing dinners and one other group dinner
Daily lunches by Cocinar Mexicano
Private faculty reading and dinner
Public readings and book signings
Village tour and other cultural events
Escorted pyramid hike
Closing dinner

Bath Children’s Novel Award

The Bath Children’s Novel Award is an international writing competition for unpublished and independently published novelists. This years judge is literary agent Hilary Delamere of The Agency. The winner will receive £2,500 (approximately $3285 US). And the most promising longlisted novel, will receive a free place on the Cornerstones Literary Consultancy online 18 week course Edit Your Novel the Professional Way , valued at £1,800 (approximately $2365 US).

Some of the past participants and winners have gone on to getting agents and/or publishing deals. Inaugural winner Lucy Van Smit was swiftly signed by literary agent Sallyanne Sweeney. Jane Brittan attracted a Carnegie Medal nomination for her indie-published debut. Shortlistee Sophie Cameron signed a book deal with Macmillan Children’s after accepting representation with literary agent Hellie Ogden for her YA novel Out of the Blue. Struan Murray signed a six figure deal with Penguin Random House for his novel Orphans of the Tide.

The Bent Agency is looking for adult fiction interns. This is a great way to learn more about an agent’s work and decision-making process. Past interns have been writers for adults, adult librarians, elementary school teachers, MFA students, and passionate readers. This is an unpaid internship which will require a ten hour per week commitment and you do NOT have to live in New York.

YA Discovery Contest 2018

Serendipity Literary Agency is hosting their annual writer’s Young Adult Discovery Competition. If writers are having trouble pitching ideas, no worries with this contest because they won’t even need a query! Seriously, only the first 250 words will be needed to submit.

YA literary agent Regina Brooks and her team will read all of the entries and determine the top 20 submissions. (There will be great prizes for the top winners!) These submissions will then be read by editors from many of the major publishing houses. Past judges include editors from Scholastic, Random House/Penguin, Little Brown, Candlewick, Bloomsbury, Simon and Schuster, JIMMY Patterson Books, and Abram Books. Judges will whittle the top 20 down to five winners, including a Grand Prize Winner.

Submissions open on November 1, 2018 at 12:01am (ET) and close on November 30, 2018 at 12:59pm (ET). Only one entry per person with a $15 entry fee. The contest is open to U.S. and Canada residents only.

#PBPitch is This Week!

It’s time for another picture book twitter party using the hashtag #PBPitch! So, if you write or illustrate picture books, this is the event for you. This party will take place Thursday, October 25, 2018 from 8am-8pm EST. But remember, anyone can troll the feed, so be sure and do your research! There will be legitimate agents and editors popping in and out, including those that haven’t confirmed their attendance. (You can visit the PBPitch website for a list of over 100 picture book agents.)

Oh, how I love the creation of new writerly contests to help writers polish their work and get in front of agents! Fall Fiction Fest will be hosted by Michelle Hauck, Marty Mayberry, and Amy Trueblood. They will pick ten selections each to mentor. Manuscripts can be middle grade, young adult, new adult, or adult fiction. All genres are allowed except for erotica.

This contest requires a query and first 250 pages of a polished manuscript to enter. Submissions will only be open for 24 hours, so make sure you don’t miss the window of opportunity on October 31, 2018! And as always, good luck!

Great news! Skylark Literary Agency has put together a competition for fiction manuscripts geared toward young readers of ages 8-12. (Non-fiction is not accepted.) They are looking for outstanding new stories with strong characters. Submissions must be from unagented and unpublished writers.
