Writers House is searching for an intern with an interest in publishing. Office experience is a plus with knowledge and interest in genre fiction; especially, young adult, thrillers, mysteries, romance, and science fiction/ fantasy. The end goal of the internship is to provide its participants an education in the publishing industry from the perspective of a literary agency. According to Writers House, at the end of the program the interns:

•Will have developed sound criteria for evaluating query letters, partial manuscripts, and full manuscripts.
•Will have advanced their ability to generate rejection letters, reader’s reports, editorial letters, and pitch letters.
•Will have gained new administrative skills that pertain specifically to publishing including Literary Expert, comparing contracts, reviewing royalty statements, and managing and maintaining calendars.
•Will have advanced their cover letter and resume writing skills.
•Will have advanced their job interviewing skills.

This internship involves a series of ongoing programs; specifically, weekly intern meetings, weekly tutorials, evening seminars, and one-on-one sessions. Interns will regularly engage in a broad range of editorial, administrative, organizational, and logistical duties as they develop the skills requisite to entry-level positions in publishing.

The internship will be September 30, 2019 – January 24, 2020 in New York with an application due date of September 23, 2019. Payment will be a monthly stipend. To apply, send cover and resume to:

McIntosh & Otis, Inc. is looking for an intern for the children’s department (picture book, middle grade, and young adult literature). The internship is unpaid and must be enrolled as a student. They would like an intern to work 12-18 hours per week and to commit to a 4-month term, but they’ll work with the interns schedule. The agency will also work with students to possibly receive academic credit.

Requirements:

Currently enrolled as a student
Voracious reader
Strong writer
Keen editorial eye
Interested in children’s literature and familiarity with current trends in picture books through YA
Detail-oriented, with office skills as a plus
Enthusiastic

Oregon Literary Fellowship FY 2020

Oregon Literary Fellowships are intended to help Oregon writers initiate, develop, or complete literary projects. Fellowships are also awarded to support Oregon’s independent publishers, small presses, and literary magazines. Monetary prizes for the fellowships range around $3500 and $10,000 with several being given out in various categories.

This fellowship is sponsored by Literary Arts with a deadline of August 2, 2019. And though being a resident of Oregon is one requirement, be sure to read the entire submission information, guidelines and categories before entering.

The Bath Children’s Novel Award is an international writing competition for unpublished and independently published novelists. This years judge is literary agent Lauren Gardner of Bell Lomax Moreton Agency . The winner will receive £2,500 (approximately $3285 US). And the most promising longlisted novel, will receive a free place on the Cornerstones Literary Consultancy online 18 week course Edit Your Novel the Professional Way , valued at £1,800 (approximately $2365 US).

Some of the past participants and winners have gone on to getting agents and/or publishing deals. Inaugural winner Lucy Van Smit was swiftly signed by literary agent Sallyanne Sweeney. Jane Brittan attracted a Carnegie Medal nomination for her indie-published debut. Shortlistee Sophie Cameron signed a book deal with Macmillan Children’s after accepting representation with literary agent Hellie Ogden for her YA novel Out of the Blue. Struan Murray signed a six figure deal with Penguin Random House for his novel Orphans of the Tide.

Carina Press: New LGBTQ+ Imprint Submission Call

Carina Press, a digital-first imprint of Harlequin, is accepting submissions for a new trope-based LGBTQ+ contemporary romance line called Carina Adores, which will launch in early 2020. This is huge news for the LGBTQ+ writing community, readers, and lovers of all things romance!

Think of changing agents? I have a friend currently considering this, so when I read the below blog post (scroll for link), I felt this was something very relevant to share. Sometimes it’s necessary to move your writing career forward to change an agent, but can be scary because no one wants to be in the query trenches again.

I’ve heard some writer’s gasp when they hear an author wants to switch their agent because they don’t understand the reasons. One popular reason is because an agent that signed an author on their adult fantasy doesn’t want to represent the writer’s new manuscript that’s a middle grade historical fiction, or doesn’t represent middle grade at all. I’ve read several articles over the years regarding why writer’s would consider making a change. This past weekend, I read another great blog post on this subject by Dahlia Adler and thought I’d share. I’ve followed her for several years (on Twitter and her blog) and definitely recommend subscribing to her newsletter.

So, for anyone considering changing their agent, or curious to know why someone would change an agent, here is her very informative article with things to consider when doing new research:
