Chicago Writing Workshop

Per the Philadelphia Writing Workshop website, this writing event (November 17, 2018) is a wonderful opportunity to get intense instruction over the course of one day, pitch a literary agent or editor (optional), get your questions answered, and more. Note that there are limited seats at the event (200 total). They will inform everyone directly on the website when seats are closed.

If you are in the need of a critique partner, perhaps #CPMatch is a good place to look. Megan Lally has hosted this event since 2014. And this Saturday, September 29, 2018 begins another round to hunt your perfect wordsmith mate!

How it works:

Create a twitter pitch of the manuscript you need feedback on.
Include the hashtag #CPMatch
Include the age category and genre (example: MG Fantasy)
Abbreviate your critique style(s). (Go here for acronyms)
Tweet pitch only ONCE!
Then read other pitches to find a match!

If you spot someone that you think would be a good fit, then tweet or message them to see if they’d like to swap first chapters. This way there is a trial run to make sure you like each other’s critique style. (Not everyone meshes, and this is okay!) So, happy pitching and I hope you find your wordsmith partner for life!

Yes! It’s #MSWL Day!

That’s right folks, today agents and editors tweet about their manuscript wish lists on twitter using the hashtag #MSWL. So, if you’re looking for an agent, read their wishes because you just might’ve written exactly what they’re looking for. As for the editors, be sure and check their guidelines because not all of them accept unagented manuscripts. Then, why are they tweeting you ask? Because agents need to submit their clients just the same as when an author subs to an agent.

Don’t worry if you miss the live event, you can always scroll through the feed afterwards. And if you want to get more details regarding what agents/editors want, go to the website Manuscript Wish List. Now, quit dawdling and get to perusing the hashtag!

Internship opportunity (London): Translation Rights at A.M. Heath

If you live in the London area, A.M. Heath is currently offering a three-month, paid internship in their Translation Rights department!

According to their website: the ideal candidate will have strong administrative skills, a genuine enthusiasm for books and international publishing, and enjoy working as part of a friendly, close-knit team. The role involves administrative work supporting the Rights team – logging submissions, organizing paperwork, coordinating materials with publishers and authors – with a focus on preparing for the Frankfurt Book Fair.

Experience within publishing and/or knowledge of another language would be welcome, but is not necessary.

They want someone to start immediately and work until late November. The internship is full-time; hours are 9:30 to 5:30 with an hour for lunch. The salary will be the London living wage.

The Bent Agency is searching for an adult intern, as well as a YA/MG intern. The internships are a great way to learn more about an agent’s work and decision-making process. Past interns have been writers for children, children’s librarians, elementary school teachers, MFA students, and passionate readers. This is an unpaid internship which will require a minimum of ten hours per week commitment. The great news is that you do NOT have to live in New York.

PitchWars Blog Hop Has Begun!

If you haven’t heard, PitchWars has posted the mentor’s blog hops for 2018! Woo-hoo! Can you believe it’s that time of year again? Be sure to check out each mentors blog in the genre you write to see what’s on their wish list. There are 107 mentors total this year. Also, keep an eye on the agent’s page because many have already signed up to participate. The PitchWars staff will update the page as more agents enroll. (So far, 63 as of this moment.)

Unfamiliar with PitchWars? This is an event where mentors select a mentee’s manuscript to revise to help them get ready for an agent round. That’s right, they help a mentee rework their entire manuscript for free. This is because agented authors and editors want to give back to the writerly community. How exciting is that? There is so much love people!

Submissions will be open from August 27, 2018 (midnight EST) and ends on August 29, 2018 (10pm EST). Manuscripts must be completed and polished in order to enter. This is the crème de la crème of writing contests and only happens once a year! So, get those manuscripts edited and select the mentors you want to sub to. You only get to pick four!
