Skylark Agency is hosting a middle grade competition to find original talent for children. They are wanting to find great stories for ages 8-12 from creative writers. They have leading experts from the UK children’s publishing industry as guest judges to help them pick a winner.

Along with these three professionals, Joanna and Amber of Skylark Literary will also help create the judging panel. The prize will be a one-to-one editorial critique of your finished manuscript by phone, or in person (locations allowing). Deadline to enter is December 24, 2018. A Twitter pitch event exclusively for faith-based fiction is being hosted by Little Lamb Books on November 28, 2018 between 8am – 8pm CST. This is for board books, picture books, middle grade, young adult, and adult fiction that fall under the categories of inspirational, faith-based, biblical worldview, or Christian. Different denominations, ethnicities, a POV in this niche are encouraged. Be sure to use the hashtag #FaithPitch and only pitch 4 times per manuscript during the pitch window. (Maximum of 4 manuscripts are permitted.)

Under The Volcano Master Classes In Mexico

Under The Volcano has master classes over a nine day stay in Tepoztlan, Mexico. This retreat is for writers wanting to vacation, learn, and write on their WIP simultaneously. Even greater, these types of trips are tax deductible for writers. (Yes, you heard that right.)

The next session will be January 10-20, 2019 and the program fee includes:

Tuition for 6 three-hour workshops
One individual conference
Opening reception, orientation and closing dinners and one other group dinner
Daily lunches by Cocinar Mexicano
Private faculty reading and dinner
Public readings and book signings
Village tour and other cultural events
Escorted pyramid hike
Closing dinner

Bath Children’s Novel Award

The Bath Children’s Novel Award is an international writing competition for unpublished and independently published novelists. This years judge is literary agent Hilary Delamere of The Agency. The winner will receive £2,500 (approximately $3285 US). And the most promising longlisted novel, will receive a free place on the Cornerstones Literary Consultancy online 18 week course Edit Your Novel the Professional Way , valued at £1,800 (approximately $2365 US).

Some of the past participants and winners have gone on to getting agents and/or publishing deals. Inaugural winner Lucy Van Smit was swiftly signed by literary agent Sallyanne Sweeney. Jane Brittan attracted a Carnegie Medal nomination for her indie-published debut. Shortlistee Sophie Cameron signed a book deal with Macmillan Children’s after accepting representation with literary agent Hellie Ogden for her YA novel Out of the Blue. Struan Murray signed a six figure deal with Penguin Random House for his novel Orphans of the Tide.

HarperCollins Children’s Books Diverse Voices Open Inbox

HarperCollins Children’s Books has opened it’s doors to writer’s of diverse backgrounds to submit work. This is a contest for middle grade manuscripts (ages 8-12) in any genre or format. A few of the rules are:

Must be 18 years of age
Must have a diverse background: (Examples, but not limited to) LGBTQIA, Native, people of color, gender diversity, people with disabilities, and ethnic, cultural, and religious minorities.
Document in Microsoft Word or PDF, no larger than 5 MB

The winner will receive:

Editorial feedback from a panel of HarperCollins editors in writing, including an edit letter and a thirty-minute phone consultation.
Consideration for publication by the HarperCollins Children’s Books’ acquisitions group.

Beaming Books is hosting a contest for picture books written to help kids thrive emotionally, socially and spiritually. The stories should cover topics on self-esteem, kindness, ethics, or faith. If you have an unpublished picture book of 1,000 words or less that meet the publishers mission, then The Beaming Books Children’s Picture Book Writing Contest might be for you!
