Scholastic’s Graphix Novel Contest

The deadline is fast approaching for Scholastic’s Graphix Imprint contest. Up to FIVE talented debut graphic novelists will win the chance to be published by Scholastic’s Graphix imprint. The editors involved in selecting submissions have a focus on creator-driven graphic novels appropriate for children and teens that bring exceptional art, rich content and strong storytelling to realistic fiction, memoir, fantasy and beyond.

Winners will receive an offer to publish their work with Scholastic and a $15,000 advance! Be sure to check out the complete guidelines before entering. And take note, graphic novelists need to hurry because the deadline is April 1, 2017. (I’m not a-foolin’!)

Picture Book Party To Get An Agent

Holy-moly! It’s another picture book contest. Things are looking up for the PB writers and illustrators, indeed. On March 26, 2017 Michelle Hauck and Sharon Chriscoe will co-host a Picture Book Party. Submission will open at noon EST and will close when 250 entrants have been received. You need to have a completed and polished PB manuscript and illustrations are encouraged to be submitted (if you’re an illustrator). The agent round will be between April 5-7, 2017. Minnesota Emerging Writers’ Grants Worth $8000 via The Loft

If you have lived in Minnesota for at least one year, this contest is for you! The Loft has opened entries for the Minnesota Emerging Writers’ Grants. Up to five grants of $8,000 each are given annually to poets, fiction writers, and creative nonfiction writers who have lived in the state of Minnesota for at least one year. Writers who have published no more than two books in any genre are eligible to apply. (So YAY, previously published authors CAN apply!) Using the online submission system, submit 15 to 20 pages of poetry or 20 to 30 pages of prose, an artist proposal, a brief bio, and a résumé by March 31, 2017. There is no entry fee. Be sure to visit the website for the required entry form and complete guidelines.

This Friday (March 24th) will be the second pitch event of 2017 for Curtis Brown Literary and Talent Agency and Conville & Walsh. These events are held on the fourth Friday of every month (so you can catch the next event if you miss this one), hosted by Rebecca Ritchie and Richard Pike of Curtis Brown

In order to submit, prepare a 140 character pitch including #PitchCB hashtag for your completed manuscript. The window will be open for 24 hours and remember to only pitch once. Also, they request no retweeting or favoring (leave this to the agents). If your pitch is “liked”, submit directly to that agent following the agencies’ submission guidelines.

James Jones Fellowship Contest

The James Jones Fellowship Contest is for a novel-in-progress by a United States unpublished author. The award is given annually with a grand prize of $10,000. There are two runner-ups given a prize of $1000 each. A selection from the winning work will be published in Provincetown Arts. In order to enter, the author needs to submit the first 50 pages of the novel-in-progress, a two-page outline, and a $30 entry fee.

According to the web page, the award is intended to honor the spirit of unblinking honesty, determination, and insight into the cultural and social issues exemplified by the late James Jones, author of From Here to Eternity and other prose narratives of distinction. Operation Awesome is hosting a Pass or Pages contest finally this year. Woot! For this round, the category is for adult science fiction or fantasy. Submissions are open NOW from February 13-15, 2017. National Endowment For The Arts Grant

This is a grant for published writers to help them set aside time for writing, research, travel, and general career advancement. The grant awards $25,000 to the winners. The deadline to submit your application is tomorrow, March 8, 2017.

This year applications are for fiction and creative non-fiction. The winners won’t be announced until around December, 2017. Their support of a project will be anytime between January 1, 2018 and January 1, 2019.

If you write poetry, applications will be taken early 2018 for a 2019 winning and support. As always, good luck!

Son of a Pitch Twitter Party

There is a twitter party for #SonofaPitch tomorrow hosted by Katie Hamstead Teller. There are a few reputable small publishers that will be perusing the feed, but I don’t think agents will be attending. However, tweet regardless (only once per hour per manuscript) because you never know who’ll show up to favorite your pitch. With that said, remember to ALWAYS research before submitting your book baby. Just because you get a favorite, doesn’t mean you have to send.

The site says the contest goes all day, but Katie mentions not monitoring early tweets because it’ll be 5am where she’s at. I’m not sure what that means about the start time though. But, it you plan on pitching, be sure to include the hashtag #SonofaPitch, the genre, and age category. As always, good luck!

Writer-in-Residence via Mall of America

Thanks to Sarah Vowell, I learned Mall of America is celebrating their 25th anniversary in the year 2017. As part of the celebration, they are sponsoring a Writer-in-Residence Contest to find a gifted writer to capture how much they’ve grown over the years.

According to the website, the winner will spend five days deeply immersed in the Mall atmosphere while writing on-the-fly impressions in their own words. The winner will stay at the attached hotel and receive a $400 gift card to buy food and drinks, as well as collecting an honorarium for the time put into their prose.

You don’t have to be experienced to enter, as they will take writers from all levels of writing backgrounds. Entries are open to the U.S. and D.C. Submissions are now open and end on March 10, 2017.
