This Friday (January 29th) will be the first pitch event of 2016 for Curtis Brown Literary and Talent Agency and Conville & Walsh. These events are held on the fourth Friday of every month, so you can catch the next event if you miss this one.

In order to submit, prepare a 140 character pitch including #pitchCB hashtag for your completed manuscript. The window will be open for 24 hours and remember to only pitch once! If your pitch is “liked”, submit directly to that agent following that agencies’ submission guidelines.

WRITING IN THE MARGINS: QUERY CONTEST

Here is a contest to start the new year off with a chance to get a literary agent, hosted by Writing in the Margins. This is for unpublished and unagented works featuring a person from an underrepresented group. This person needs to be in the starring role and not the BFF of the main character. They are looking for diversity!

The way it works: Entrants post their query and first chapter to a message board where moderators help whip them into shape. The entrants can post from January 1st, 2016 to January 15th,2016. The moderators will pick the best ten to move forward to the agent round. (Go here to register.) Be sure to follow their blog for important information and dates.

PITCHMAS TIME IS HERE!

Oh yes, it’s that holly-jolly Pitchmas time! You know? The best time of the year! Where agents and editors stalk the feed to give you literary cheer!

Jessa Russo and Tamara Mataya are at it again! This year they have 16 agents and 9 editors participating in the Pitchmas blog contest. To submit, you’ll need a 35 word pitch for your finished, polished and unpublished manuscript! They will take submissions by email only, starting Sunday 12/13/14 at 9am PST and ending Monday 12/14/15 at 6pm PST. The winners will go live on the blog December 17, 2015.

Cove Park Literature Residencies

Just look at that breathtaking view! Who wouldn’t want to write in this Scottish retreat overlooking Loch Long? This relaxing place is located on 50 acres of unspoiled hillside and is just an hour west of Glasgow. If you want to get away and work on your new manuscript, this might be the place for you!

The residencies are between May and September of 2016 and will last for one to three months. Some of Cove Park’s distinguished alumni include Margaret Atwood, Anne Carson, Brian Chikwava, Helen Cross, Rachel Cusk, Fred D’Aguiar, Joe Dunthorne, Jennie Erdal, Rodge Glass, John Glenday, Jen Hadfield, Jack Mapanje, Michael Pedersen, Jo Shapcott, Zoe Strachan, Chiew-Siah Tei, Kate Tough, Christos Tsiolkas, Chika Unigwe, Louise Welsh and Nicola White. Spencer Hill Press Open Submissions

Hold the presses! Writers are getting messages that Spencer Hill Press isn’t taking submissions due to new management, despite what their website says. I’ve sent an email and hopefully I’ll back soon soon with confirmation and/or new dates when they’ll start taking submissions again. I’ll keep you posted!

The clock is ticking folks! Spencer Hill Press is taking open submissions for middle grade, young adult, and new adult for sci-fi, paranormal, or urban fantasy. For those unfamiliar with the policy for Spencer Hill Press, this is HUGE because this publishing company doesn’t normally take submissions from writers that aren’t represented by a literary agent. (Please note, if you have an agent you can still submit through normal channels.)

So, if you write in one of these categories/genres and your manuscript is FINISHED and POLISHED, submit by December 10th for a chance to be published by a very reputable publishing company.  I repeat, this is a small window of opportunity, so get your submissions in by December 10th, 2015. #PitMad Is Tomorrow!

Just a quick post from my mobile (so excuse any typos or wonky layouts). I want to make sure all my readers know Brenda Drake’s #PitMad is tomorrow! So get your 140 character pitch ready. If you won’t be home, you can always use TweetDeck to schedule your tweets.

And most importantly, be aware of the new rules! You are only allowed THREE pitches per manuscript. This is because #PitMad has become so popular that agents are having issues keeping up with the feed and many pitches are getting lost in the flow of abundance.

Also make a note NOT to RT to show support for a friend. (Tag them without RT to let them know.) And always-always remember to NOT favorite another pitch you like. This is for agents and publishers to request material.
